Coates History

Coates History

Coates Quality Meats was founded in 1898 by Frank William Coates. He purchased local farmers stock and sold the meat in his Alrewas butchers shop and to the surrounding villages for the locals to enjoy.

In 1934 the business was passed over to Percy Coates, Franks sixth son.

In 1966 the running of the family business was once again passed to another family member, Peter Coates. Peter was then joined by his son, Antony Coates, in 1982.

A second butchers shop was acquired from a family cousin and opened in Borrowash, Derby, in 1988.

In 2002 we expanded our business to ensure that we kept up with modern methods, ideas and policies. This included the improvement in live stock quality of life by careful sourcing of our live stock providers and working with external organisations, such as the Humane Slaughter Association.

2009 has seen the opening of a further shop in Gungate, Tamworth.

Now over 100 years later, we still buy stock from the same farms and their farming families . We constantly strive to ensure that we remain one of the premier butchers in the area, and remain true to the family tradition of high quality local produce.
